Making Good Characters and Being a Good Player
While being a Game Master is an essential component to any table top game, the fun comes in with the players and the characters. While the Game Master Spends a lot of time creating worlds and stories, the players should be spending time on their characters as well.
The fun of table top games comes from being someone you are not and making decisions as someone you are not. While you, the player, would never personally go into a haunted house, the character might love hunting for ghosts.
In order for the game to come together nicely and be as immersive as possible, the player - characters need to be well flushed out. There needs to be a lot of information within the back story explaining how the character got into this situation in the first place. There should also be information about why the character acts the way they do and why they make the decisions they make.
There should be family members and friends in the backstory that the player-character might encounter, or may there are enemies they are trying to stay away from. As some people already know, your entire perception of yourself and who you are comes form the people or animals around you. Was your character raised by wolves or does he just act like it?
I usually Print this out for my players to help the creative process.
So while your Game Master spends time creating a world for you and your fellow players to play in, make sure you create a character that fits well. On the other hand maybe the character does not fit well at all and they are completely out of their comfort zone. Maybe they come from a different world and are just trying to fit in? Only you can decide who your character is and what they do!
